"Folk-Lor"
Horror Comedy Web Micro-Series
THE SYNOPSIS: In modern Singapore, supernatural beings aren't just haunting people - they're struggling with rental prices, dating apps, and soul-crushing job interviews. Follow a group of local folkloric creatures as they navigate the true horrors of adult life, proving that even pontianaks need LinkedIn profiles and toyols struggle with work-life balance.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Growing up with stories of pontianaks in banana trees and toyols stealing money, I've always wondered: what would these entities do in our modern world of sky-high property prices and endless job interviews? "Folk-Lor!" emerged from this peculiar intersection of supernatural folklore and millennial struggles.
Inspired by "What We Do in the Shadows," but distinctly rooted in Southeast Asian mythology, this series reimagines our local supernatural beings not as terrifying entities, but as relatable characters dealing with universal anxieties. Imagine a pontianak swiping through dating apps (how do you take selfies without a reflection?), or a toyol trying to explain their "wealth acquisition skills" during a job interview.
The horror genre has always been a powerful lens for social commentary, but why should it always be serious? By placing these mythological creatures in mundane, modern situations, we create a uniquely Singaporean satire that speaks to contemporary issues - from housing affordability to career pressure - while celebrating our rich folkloric heritage.
